A man called TMZ around 2:30pm stating that he was the thief who took the dress
from Lupita’s hotel room "after he noticed the door was ajar". The caller said he and other thieves removed several of the 6,000 Akoya pearls (rumored to be worth approximately $150,000) and headed to the garment district in downtown L.A., where he was told the pearls were not real.

The thief reportedly told TMZ the reason he returned the dress was to let the world know “Hollywood’s fake bulls–t.” TMZ contacted the L.A. Coutny Sheriff’s Department who then retrieved the bag in a garment bag inside a trash bag underneath a bathroom sink. Detectives are working to uncover if the dress returned is, in fact, the real dress stolen from Lupita’s hotel room.
